What Does "Catching Up" Mean For You In Your Homeschool?

"Catching up in homeschool" could mean a number of things specific to your family and homeschool situation, yet many homeschoolers believe that a child is never behind, as they learn at their own individual pace, and thus, catching up is not warranted. While this is essentially true that we all have our own innate strengths that lie within, not being on or around gradelevel can still pose the problem of missing educational opportunities for an extended period of time that align with that child's developmental levels and maturity.

How does one's child get behind? For instance, a child could be behind due to a pregnancy year (you were pregnant or just had a newborn baby, unable to teach homeschool), a death in the family and/or grief, mourning a loss, or even a gap year or years, or deschooling year or years. Or, maybe you just got a divorce and the last few years have been pretty rough, making it next to impossible to focus on homeschooling consistently while you're trying to start over in life. Hey, no judgement here. I've been there.

Or, maybe you did homeschool but, regardless of the reason, you've left out a subject so much that you know you need to catch up your child in that subject. Perhaps you rarely or never taught science, or reading, or handwriting, or writing, or math, etc.; therefore, you would need your child to catch up in that subject area(s).

Again, whatever the reason is behind your child being a few grade levels behind, don't beat yourself up. There have been so many homeschool moms who have had this issue, all with their own story that lead them to this point.

We don't judge at all. I don't like pointing fingers or dwelling on blame or digging into repercussions. That doesn't move anyone forward. No one has walked in your shoes. I know how difficult life can be. And, we all deal with things differently.

What I'm most interested in is supporting you in getting you and your child(ren) back on track.

Back to what "catching up" means: Whatever the reason is, "catching up" means you want your child to be on or around grade level because they've missed a few grade levels in one or more subject areas.

"Catching up" involves taking focused steps to cover educational material that your child has fallen behind on, often by adjusting the learning schedule, prioritizing certain subjects, or using additional learning resources to quickly close the gap in their studies.

Here are the KEY STRATEGIES we'll use to catch up. We will:

• Assess the gap by identifying which specific subjects or areas your child needs to focus on most by reviewing curriculum materials and assessing their current understanding.
• Set realistic goals that include SMART goals that are measurable and achievable, specifically for your child upon evaluation of the gap.
• Create a targeted plan and develop a revised schedule that allocates extra time to the lagging areas, possibly by doubling up on certain subjects for a period.
• Utilize different learning methods by incorporating a variety of learning activities like audiobooks, online tutorials, hands-on projects, or educational games to keep your child engaged and accelerate learning.
• Prioritize essential concepts and focus on the core concepts within each subject rather than trying to cover every detail, ensuring a strong foundation in key areas.
• Consider supplemental materials, such a utilizing workbooks, practice tests, or online learning platforms designed specifically for catching up on missed material.
• Consider increasing study time by devoting more dedicated hours to the lagging subjects, potentially by shortening breaks, studying on the weekends, shortening lessons in other subject areas, or creating a personalized schedule.
• Prepare you to communicate the game plan to your child, which includes discussing the catch-up plan, addressing any concerns and ensuring they understand their goals. 

Important points to remember:

• Flexibility is key. Homeschooling allows for adjustments to the schedule as needed, so be willing to adapt the catch-up plan as progress is made.
• Maintain a positive attitude. Encourage your child and celebrate their progress to maintain motivation throughout the catch-up process. 
• Commitment and dedication is required. Without those, this workshop will not work for you!
